Hurricane Irene left millions without power and significant flooding in its wake — and on Sunday, President Barack Obama said, “this is not over.”

Obama delivered a statement on Hurricane Irene at 5 p.m. on Sunday in the Rose Garden, offering his condolences to those that had lost loved ones and calling Irene “a dangerous storm that continues to produce heavy rains.”

Hurrican Irene set to bleed FEMA, inflame budget scraps in Congress

Shortly after Hurricane Irene blows through Washington, Congress will blow back into town and start fighting about how to pay for the storm and all the other natural disasters that have struck the United States this year.

If the hurricane is truly historic, as President Obama has warned, an emergency disaster appropriations bill would be necessary in September to get the government through to the beginning of fiscal 2012 on Oct. 1, aides said.

In a rare moment this summer, the seats of the United States delegation were empty when more than 220 parliamentarians from the world’s largest regional security organization gathered in Belgrade for the opening of their annual meeting.

The 17-seat U.S. delegation has the most votes in the 55-nation Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Parliamentary Assembly, a body of which Sen. Benjamin L. Cardin, D-Maryland, is an elected vice president.

Facility could double workers

Lockheed Martin’s Courtland facility will double its workforce if the Missile Defense Agency awards the company a contract to build a missile to intercept intermediate to long-range ballistic missiles, company officials said Monday.

The company and U.S. Rep. Robert Aderholt, R-Haleyville, made the announcement at Lockheed’s Huntsville facility. Aderholt said production of the missile in Courtland would be a “big win for Alabama.”

Aderholt updates Marshall County Board of Realtors on Washington's budget woes

U.S. Congressman Robert Aderholt addressed the Marshall County Board of Realtors on Thursday to share information about recent budgeting decisions in Washington.

"It's been sort of crazy over there," he said.

He said many of the issues stem from the U.S. House of Representatives' flip from Democratic to Republican control.
