Courtland Hoping for Missile Contract
WAAYTV | August 22, 2011

Courtland, AL - The Lawrence County of Courtland suddenly has a lot riding on a government contract more than a year and a half away.

Lockheed Martin announced Monday that they plan to build their new Standard Missile-3 Block IIB missiles at their facility in Courtland, doubling the number of jobs at the facility - if - the U.S. government gives them the contract in 2013.

"Lockheed Martin already understands what more companies should know" said Congressman Robert Aderholt in a prepared release. "Lawrence County is a fantastic place to do business."

The contract is open to bids until 2013, and Lockheed rival Boeing is also in the mix for the deal.

The missiles would be integrated into the AEGIS weapon system and be used to intercept incoming intermediate and long range enemy missiles
